Casas Colgadas in Cuenca

Casas Colgadas in Cuenca © Robert Bovington

The beautiful and ancient city of Cuenca is steeped in history and perfectly preserved and that is why UNESCO declared it a World Heritage Site. Famous for its ‘Hanging Houses’, there are many other reasons why this city is so special. The old town is perched on a precipice above two deep gorges carved out by the rivers Huécar and Júcar. It is here that the medieval Casas Colgadas literally overhang the Huécar gorge.

Montejaque {Serranía de Ronda}

Getting lost in the narrow streets of little pueblos blancos of Málaga is a pleasure. Montejaque is just such a village. It belongs to the comarca of Serranía de Ronda and is, of course, part of the autonomous community of Andalusia in southern Spain.

It is situated approximately 125 kilometres from the city of Málaga, 21 from Ronda and only 2 from Benaoján. It has a population of approximately 1,000 residents. The natives are called Montejaqueños.

Murcia Cathedral

Murcia Cathedral

Murcia Cathedral

If there were but one reason to visit the city of Murcia, it would have to be to see the cathedral – La Catedral de Santa María is the most impressive monument in the city. You can’t really miss it! Its 92 metre tower can be seen from miles around.

The Cathedral was built on the foundations of an old mosque and the first stone laid in 1394 but the building, as it appears today, was not completed until the 18th century.

Ronda – Tajo Gorge & Puente Nuevo

by Robert Bovington

Ronda – Tajo Gorge & Puente Nuevo © Robert Bovington

The bridge is hardly as new as its name implies – it was built over 200 years ago! It is the focal point of the town. It is a masterpiece of architecture and engineering but it took 42 years to build and special machines had to be invented to raise the huge solid stone blocks from the bottom of the gorge. Various vantage points on the bridge provide spectacular views of the gorge far below.

“It’s like going to heaven,” my wife commented, on our first drive into the Alpujarras. We had left Roquetas on one of the few grey days. It was in February and there was a lot of low cloud. We had only travelled a few miles up into the mountains, but it was a different world. Above the clouds, there was a bright blue sky and beautiful white and pink blossom of the almond trees.

Cabo de Gata – Las Salinas

Cabo de Gata – Las Salinas
© Robert Bovington
Between spring and autumn, thousands of migrating birds stop here on their journeys between Europe and Africa. Apart from flamingos, there are storks, avocets, eagles and many other types. Only a few remain in the winter when  the Salinas are drained after the autumn salt harvest.

El Nacimiento

About 1 kilometre north of Laujar is ‘El Nacimiento’ – a delightful area of waterfalls, picnic areas and places to walk. My wife and I usually go there in Spring and Autumn on weekdays and, mostly, we have the place to ourselves. It is a haven of peace and tranquillity. Nacimiento means ‘birth’ and it is here that the Río Andarax starts its journey to the sea near Almería.
